January 1, 2010, and all is well...for the most part. Two Christmases have come and gone since the Doctor, Martha Jones and Captain Jack Harkness saved the Earth from the Master. The Year That Wasn't has passed. There is a brand new future out there just begging to be explored.
When it comes to strange disappearances and other mysterious and clandestine happenings, Cardiff is not the first place most people think of. That is, unless you know about the Rift. Successfully closed in 1869 and reopened 138 years later, the Cardiff Rift, while not the only rift on planet Earth has by far been the most active. Thought to be completely closed for a second time, Torchwood branch three continued about their business protecting the citizens of Cardiff from hostile alien forces.
...until they started to find humans out of their own times. Somehow, the rift had metaphorically been left open a crack. Thankfully it wasn't large enough to let anything big and terrible through, but every so often, a citizen of Cardiff would get sucked out of their time. Some disappeared from the modern day; others arrived from the past and future. Despite all of Torchwood's efforts, nothing seemed to be able to repair the fault.
While Torchwood was trying to find a way to seal everything back up, a certain Time Lord was gallivanting across time and space with his (somewhat) new companion, Donna Noble and occasionally accompanied by Martha Jones, who spent her time trying to juggle her new position at UNIT with her complicated family life along with these outings with the Doctor. Time travel in a police box is not as easy as people might assume.
As time marched on, Torchwood Three began to find non-Welsh running through their city. In the past six months, people from around the globe are being pulled out of their time as well as space, landing near suspected and previously established rifts. So far, the general public has been too involved with their own doings and restoring their devastated city to notice much has happened, but the activity is increasing, and no one knows why.
Tragedy has struck Torchwood in recent weeks, but keeping these newest Cardiff citizens from hurting themselves and others is currently priority number one. Even though more information comes into Torchwood Three's hands every time they find another temporal refugee, no answers have been found. Who wants these rifts opened, how many are there, and why are people who have previously travelled with the Doctor more likely to get sucked through?
Jack had said that the 21st century was when it all changes.            Open The Rift is a private Doctor Who/Torchwood crossover game taking place midway through series 4 of the "new who" canon.
